One of the most common questions we hear about implants: how long do they actually last? The short answer — with good care, a very long time.
What Are Dental Implants Made Of?
An implant has three parts: a titanium or zirconia post placed into the jawbone, an abutment that connects everything, and a crown — the visible part that looks and works like a real tooth.
Average Lifespan
Under good conditions, dental implants can last 25 years or longer — in many cases, a lifetime. Studies report implant success rates above 95%.
Factors That Affect Longevity
- Oral hygiene — neglecting brushing and flossing can lead to peri-implantitis, an infection around the implant.
- Lifestyle choices — smoking notably increases the risk of implant failure.
- Diet and nutrition — a balanced diet keeps the surrounding gums healthy.
- Routine dental visits — regular checkups catch any complications early.
Making Your Implants Last Longer
Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, floss daily with implant-friendly tools, avoid sticky and very hard foods, wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth, and see us every six months.
When You Might Need a Replacement
The titanium post itself may last a lifetime, but the crown on top typically lasts 10 to 15 years before normal wear means it's time for a replacement.
