Prevent Chips, Cracks, or Gaps: Tips to Protect Your Veneers

February 18, 2025·5 min read·St. Clair Family Dentistry

Veneers are an investment in your smile. With the right habits, they'll look great for 10 to 15 years or more. Here's how to protect them.

Understanding Veneers

Veneers are thin, custom shells bonded to the front of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are more durable than composite, and with proper care, their lifespan generally ranges from 10 to 15 years.

Tips to Protect Your Veneers

  1. Avoid hard and sticky foods that can chip or pull at veneers.
  2. Maintain good oral hygiene — brush twice daily and floss gently.
  3. Don't use your teeth as tools for opening packages or biting nails.
  4. Protect your teeth during sports with a well-fitted mouthguard.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
  6. Limit staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine.
  7. Address teeth grinding — ask us about a nightguard if you grind.
