Best Foods to Eat After Root Canal Treatment

October 1, 2024·4 min read·St. Clair Family Dentistry

After a root canal, what you eat matters for comfort and healing. Here's a simple guide to the best foods — and the ones to put off for a few days.

The Golden Rules

Choose foods that don't require much chewing. Favor foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein. And when you can, chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the treated tooth.

Foods to Eat After a Root Canal

  • Smoothies (blended banana, berries, yogurt, a scoop of protein)
  • Warm broth or creamy soups
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled, poached, or soft-boiled eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Applesauce and blended fruits
  • Avocado

Foods to Avoid

  • Chips, pretzels, and nuts
  • Caramels, gum, and chewy candies
  • Hard foods like raw vegetables, crusty bread, and tough meats
  • Spicy or acidic foods
  • Very hot or very cold foods and drinks

Once your permanent crown or filling is in place and any sensitivity has settled, you can return to your normal diet.
