Why Root Canal Treatment Is Less Painful Than You Think

April 15, 2025·4 min read·St. Clair Family Dentistry

Root canals have a reputation that's decades out of date. The truth: a modern root canal is about relieving pain, not causing it.

Where the Reputation Came From

The fear most people associate with root canals comes from a time before modern anesthesia and techniques. What they're really remembering is the pain of the infection that made the root canal necessary in the first place — not the procedure itself.

What It's Actually Like Today

With effective local anesthesia, the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb. Most patients say the experience feels similar to getting a filling. The procedure removes the infected pulp that was causing pain, so people typically leave feeling better, not worse.

Recovery Is Usually Easy

Mild tenderness for a day or two is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most people return to their normal routine the same day. If you've been putting off a root canal out of fear, the reality is almost always far easier than you imagine.
