How Dental Implants Can Save Your Smile

October 25, 2024·5 min read·St. Clair Family Dentistry

Dental implants are one of the most popular and effective ways to replace missing teeth. Here's how they work and who they're right for.

Implants use a three-part system: an implant screw surgically placed into the jawbone, a metal post (abutment) that attaches to it, and a crown or denture attachment on top.

Who's a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Implants tend to work best for people who have:

  • Healthy oral tissues
  • A fully grown jawbone
  • Sufficient bone density
  • Good overall health for a minor surgical procedure
  • A preference to avoid dentures
  • A desire to chew and speak more easily
  • Willingness to commit to a process that takes several months
  • No tobacco use

Risks and Evaluation

Risks are rare but can include infection at the implant site or irritation of nearby structures. Before any work, a thorough evaluation includes a comprehensive dental exam with X-rays and 3D models, a review of your dental and medical history, and a personalized treatment plan.
